t the intersection of the railway tracks Den Haag – Utrecht and Rotterdam – Amsterdam the complex of “Bink 36” is situated. It consists of 4 buildings with a total floor area of approximately 38000m2. In the first half of last century the complex has been built by “Rijksgebouwendienst”, in different phases, to accommodate the “Centrale Magazijndienst” and the “Centrale werkplaats” for PTT. The PTT (KPN) has left the complex mid 2006, subsequently Vestia Den Haag Zuid Oost has bought it.
Next years the complex will be uses as a business assembly building, education location, event space and dance theatre. As business buildings from KPN the complex had a closed character. With the current occupation this character should be transformed to a public building with a clear structure. CHNL architects got the assignment from Vestia Den Haag Zuid Oost to make a design for this restructuring. Besides this restructuring we also guide the request for building permit, belonging to the change of function. For a good grounded approach a building history research has been done, in collaboration with Lisette Kapper Onderzoek & Architectuur, in the different building phases the complex has known.
Next to this assignment CHNL got another assignment to develop a vision for the complex. The location is situated at the border of the area “de Binckhorst”. This area, at the edge of the centre of Den Haag, will undergo a transformation the next decades. For this transformation the municipality has drawn a structural vision. The office OMA has developed the master plan for this area. In our vision we investigate the different use abilities of the complex and we explore the connection to the future “Binckhorst”.
